Two US sailors have been arrested on August 2, 2023, on suspicion of spying for China and receiving thousands of dollars for the sensitive and classified information traded. Jinchao Wei, 22, a naturalized US citizen, and Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao, 26 were arrested on charges of providing a Chinese agent(s) with US secrets regarding the amphibious assault ship USS Essex and Marine maneuvers and a radar operations equipment on Okinawa. Their activities stemmed in 2021 and 2022 while at naval bases in California. China refuted such accusations as ridiculous and denies any association with this spying case.
These actions can serve to spotlight increased China tensions and spying activity within the US. What I believe is happening is that as the spotlight in America has been on one man – Trump our adversaries are taking advantage of the chaos that has ensued. This is a prime demonstration of what happens and very superficial of what can be happening in the more auspicious areas of our country’s economic and national security areas.
