The Republican lead NC legislature has banned abortion after 12 weeks. In reality, it defaults to 10 weeks for a medical-approved abortion involving an abortion-inducing drug like mifepristone where a doctor has to verify the 10-week or less gestational period. Still, there are provisions for rape, incest, and the threat of death to the mother considerations that are much better than most other similar conservative states with a 6-week ban with nearly no acceptions. Governor Cooper a Democrat had vetoed the initial ban but the General Assembly quickly met once again to pass the vote on Tuesday. The Governor lobbied publicly in several districts where he felt he could win support but the supermajority Republican Legislature trumped his veto.
